Essential Oil : Lavender

Extracted from:

Lavender oil is obtained from flowers of the different species of lavender by steaming the top of the plant.

Origin:

Origin of lavender is traced to the Mediterranean. Its place of origin is also linked to India and Middle East.

Extraction methods:

Dried leaves of lavender are gone through steam distillation and this method generates much more oil as compared to other extraction methods. In this process, flowers are put into a pot and are given low pressure steam. The oil glands of the plant burst into oil because of the steam. The vapors of the oil collect into the steam. The cold water is run through the coils which cools steam and condenses it to oil. The lavender oil and water are separated into different containers.

  • Lavender oil massage relives menstrual cramps.
  •  It also treats face wrinkles.
  • It can be applied on wounds / scrapes because of its wound-healing properties.

  •           It is blended with a carrier oil and can be massaged into the skin.
  •        It can also help to sleep well, by rubbing the oil on the pillow or applying it on one’s temples, feet or wrists.
  •           It can also be added into water before taking bath

  •           Aroma therapists prescribe to use lavender oil diluted with a carrier oil.
  •           It is also added into hot water.
  •           Or permeate it on a cotton pad

Side effects:

  •           It may cause allergic reactions in some people.
  •           It can also result in causing nausea, headache or vomiting.
  •          It can cause constipation and increased appetite when taken by mouth
